New shocks - advise me please.
« on: April 27, 2009, 07:29:07 AM »
Hey guys,

Im looking at upgrading my shocks on my Tmaxx 3.3. Im getting more and more frustrated with the stock ones and the way the truck wallows into corners. I know Im never gonna get buggy-like handling, but to be able to turn a corner without flipping onto the roof would be a start ;)

Is there anywhere out there a conversion kit for 4 shocks for a T-maxx 3.3, and more to the point, is it worth getting one?

I only ask 'cos its so damned expensive to get 8 upgraded shocks and Im only a poor 38yr old kid who only gets a small amount of allowance from my financial adviser (ie wife) ;)

Finally, what shocks should I get? Ive heard all the guff about Integy not being any good. I quite like the Blue Star ally shocks, but cant find any in the UK and someone also suggested fitting some CEN truck shocks instead of the T-maxx ones.

Any thought/advice gratefully received.

Beds.

try adjusting the ride height first with the clips as the higher the truck is the higher centre of gravity it will have and more likely to flip the fewer clips it has, gives it lower centre of gravity so less chancxe off flipping, also im sure changing, maybe to a softer or harder spring . . . i think softer would be best. (am i right on this??)
maybe be a cheaper option than buying all new shocks.

Yeah, you want to lower it down, but stiffen the suspension at the same time. I'm not sure if anyone does an anti-roll bar kit for the tmaxx, but it might be wroth having a look for. You could consider taking the spacers out, getting the hardest springs, and cutting them down slightly, to lower the truck. Don't cut too much though, or it'll bottom out - just do little bits at a time, then test drive, then maybe take more off.

You can lower it, get different shocks and all kinds of stuff to make it handle more `truggy` like, which could cost shed loads in the end. I suggest you either sell it and actually buy a truggy, or accept that is a truck and adjust your driving style a bit-slower on the turns. Less grippy tyres may be a reasonably cheap fix, so you do not suffer from too much grip roll.

spotted this as was looking for bits for my truck, http://www.modelsport.co.uk/index.php?CallFunction=ShowSpecification&ItemID=18539&CID=GBP&CID=USD&CID=GBP
good luck with getting it sorted anyway, why not sell up and save the cash you would spend on the t-maxx on handling and buy a buggy/truggy and get good power and handling?

Easiest way is to remove the piston from the shock, slip a 10mm piece of fuel tube on and then reassemble the shock. This'll drop the ride height a bit so it's probably a good idea to get some thicker oil or stronger shock springs to stop it bottoming out so easily.

The point is, if we upgrade to the big bores with aluminum caps, the caps hold up well with heavy oil but the force is then transferred to the shock shafts in a hard landing which leads to bent shock shafts. It takes some seriously heavy wt oil and stiff springs to keep a TMaxx from bottoming out from a 4-5 foot drop. When the heavy oil and springs are used the handling of the truck suffers greatly.
