New Truggy
« on: February 04, 2009, 07:44:41 PM »
Hi there

My Rc collection is growing as I now have 4 cars, amongst them a nitro Savage 3.5

I was thinking of getting a truggy to hopefully race. I have sold my Axial crawler as I am pretty broke, so budget is not great. I would get a Hong Nor but they are too expensive. Hobao Hyper ST is not as expensive but seems to have loads of plastic – and I am still a clumsy driver. I want something like my Savage that can take a beating.

Someone suggested these to me:
1)   Tamiya Nitrage 5.2 _ I can get this from a friend of mine relatively cheap
2)   Ansmann Racing Terrier RTR – sells for @£220

What do you think of these? The Nitrage seems strage with its modular construction whatever that is....

Will they be good for racing and parts or am I better off saving my money until I can afford something better??

By the way: I would also consider a buggy but I think that they are a lot more difficult to control.

Cheers guys
 O0

The nitrage is discontinued and also isn't classed as a truggy, its more and unlimited MT class truck.

The Hyper ST is a lot of plastic but the upside of that is it's very light so it doesn't need chunks of aluminium all over the shop.

The terrier is a great product for the price, dunno how well it'll fair on the track but it must be worth a go at least...

The Hyper ST is good around a track, and is actually very tough. The PRO version is bulletproof!
The Terrier is good for the money, spares are cheap and readily available, and it will get round a track, but to be honest if you are gonna race it I would save up and go for one of the more popular models.

If I was buying new it would be between the Hong Nor X2 CRT or the ST PRO (which I have had before)...
Personally I didn't like the Losi 8-T but loads of people rave about it and you can pick them up pretty reasonably second hand.
X1 CRT's seem to be going dirt cheap second hand (I wasn't a big fan)

The Nitrage looks a lot better than it actually is and will be outclassed by pretty much anything else...... I'm not sure why Tamiya can't make decent Nitro's

Are you after a kit or RTR?

Thanks Big_Mr_V

I am after an RTR.
The Hong Nor x1-CRT .32 RTR any good?

They're fine for a first truggy or a basher, but it won't keep up with the newer models. I think the Hyper ST RTR is a better car, although the Mac .28 engine isn't always that easy to get on with.

I dunno, the 801XT truggy looks promising... apart from the £600 price tag!!

Ouch! I don't imagine I'll see too many of those at the track

At the moment I am being tempted by a second hand mugen mbx5t.
What do you guys think? Is it an old truggy? How is it for parts? Does not seem as popular as HNOR.

Thanks

Mugen have some very loyal fans, but their stuff is very expensive for what it is IMO and not everywhere sells them.
It is a nice truggy, but you won't see too many of them around and I don't know what spares availability is like.

I guess it depends on the price. If it's anywhere near the price of an X1 then I'd go for the Mugen, otherwise go for a new X2

Thanks for all your advise. i bought a Hong Nor x2

A very basic question: what type of receiver should I buy? Would one like the Savage's be OK? Any idea whether this truggy has the electronics box ?

Thanks again

Every RC will have a radio box, and any receiver will be fine.

Any receiver will be fine, as long as it works with your Transmitter!
