Building a custom rolling chassis for a Porsche 934 RSR
« on: January 10, 2009, 11:12:13 AM »
Intro

A little while back (well over a year ago) I got myself a Tamtech Porsche 934 shell with the intention of fitting it to a 1/12th chassis. I hated the Tamiya chassis it was meant to sit on, and quite wanted 4wd, so first of all I tried an Xray T1m. Basics, the wheel base was too long and although I was happy to shorten it, the wheels wouldn't fit over the hubs.

So I sold that! Next attempt was with a Sportwerks Recoil. I could have made this work but I went off it , as I decided I wanted to use 1/10 electrics rather than 1/18th. This was a problem, as the shell is pretty small. So to get 1/10 electrics AND 4wd would be a bit of a challenge...

The Project:

The first thing I did was pick up a rear bulkhead/layshaft bit from a Xray T1. After a bit of thinking about how to get belt drive and fit a battery, I decided to get another rear bulkhead. The raised layshaft allows the belt to pass over the battery, thus sorting the issue of space.

Next I ordered the corners from the Tamtech GT01 from HK. All I've really changed on these so far is the front now have drive shafts going through them (the Tamtech's only RWD).

I'm now waiting on another order from HK for the pins that go through the wishbones. I need to mod the bulkheads so the battery will fit on the middle again. Next week I'll try and make a chassis out of MDF. Also on order are some shocks. Will look at inboard suspension. I also need to sort out belts. I'm fitting a standard rear belt to the rear bulkhead, and then I need to find a belt the right length (after tensioning with a pulley) so it will clear the battery. If anyone has a belt they think they can help me out with or know of a belt that will fit on the xray's pulley but is shorter than usual, it would be very much appreciated.

I plan to finish the bodyshell in gulf colours, though I might leave one half clear so you can see what I've built behind it. Thanks for reading, I'll keep this updated as I go along :)

Thats awesome, and makes a change from the usual crawler conversions. I can't help with the belt though, I do hope you can find something or you may have to get one custom made to fit.

Keep us updated as you go on, i'd very much like to see how it comes together. Good work O0

Thanks guys  :)

Laughing Potato, I've been sent a link to the belt suppliers Schumacher used to use, so if I can't find one, as you said I'll go for a custom belt.

Looking great there. I might be missing something, but what are you doing about steering?

Thanks :)

A quick update, will get the MDF cut tomorrow with any luck. The shocks are just resting there, not sure if they will go in that position, though that will probably be one of the next things I work out. Will be getting nicer pictures up when I've cut the chassis out, sorry this one's a bit poor!

Just a note, that's a free hand drawn chassis and will be modified appropriately :)

Thanks, and I think you might be right. I'm sure it will be do-able though!

Haha, I would have done it rwd if I could have got the motor behind the rear diff, but that wouldn't have fitted with the bulkheads I have. And it would have been too easy ;)

EDIT: Think of it as the turbo :D

Wow, I'm not sure how I missed this! Very, very interesting project, and I love the idea of using two T1 rear assemblies! Nice thinking. O0 The only area that concerns me a wee bit is the chassis; I imagine MDF would be quite heavy, and not very stiff? I'm sure you've got it all in hand though, so just shout me down if I'm wrong lol.

Looking great so far, and good luck on progress. I can't wait to see this thing finished! O0
For the best R/C product news, reviews and forums, visit www.rckingdom.co.uk!

Cold Fusion Status: Not running, due to broken suspension arm.
Air Fury Status: Pretty much running. Needs new battery setup (overheating badly), and soon, motors.
Electrical Storm Status: Under construction; 25% complete. Will finish it sometime before the earth is swallowed up by the sun.
TBX (Tamiya Brushless Xtreme) Status: STILL waiting to be sold as an "almost-roller". PM me if interested!
King Bee Status: Almost flying, just needs a few bits and some repairs.
Solaris Status: It flies! Ailerons are rubbish, but it flies. Just doesn't like landing...
Project X: So secret, it doesn't even have a codename!

Thank you for the kind words :)
You're right about MDF being the wrong material for the job, I'm only using it for a prototype chassis and when it's all build and everything else is finalised, I'll make a proper one out of carbon fibre. I just want to make sure everything's perfect before I start messing around with a £30 sheet ;)
