VXLing the Slash.
« on: January 02, 2009, 05:57:58 PM »
Not much to do here, already had the suspension setup sorted and a digital receiver in it. 60wt all round, stock shocks and springs on front, E-maxx big bores and stock E-maxx springs on the rear. Front looks low but it works nicely.

Just had to source some 3s lipos to go with the 2s I already had (note, the real reason for picking up the 3s lipos is because I've put in an order for a Savage Flux) and sort out the truck in terms of replacement parts and general condition. Some 50,000wt oil in the rear diff for a bit of limited slip and a set of road rages to create the drifty, over powered street Slash! Plumped for some 3s 5000mah 20-30c Zippys from hobby city, $59 each, not bad! They are slightly larger than the Slash battery compartment, so I had to slice out part of the tray so the wires would be free, apart from that those 3s go in stock nicely, and don't slide around.

Ordered the VXL system from Tower Hobbies the other day, got it for $159 shipped with my super savers shipping discount and the current $20 off over $149 offer. Should be here next week fingers crossed, and those rear tyres will be gone by the week after that lol. Not sure what to do about gearing, I know Traxxas recommend 23t for 11.1 running, reckon I should aim for about 20t normal use?

im looking to get a slash myself. are they quite tough standard? and what kind of speed do you get out of them standard? i dont wanna do the usual and spend a million quid on it as soon as i get it. yours looks a beast with the road rages on. i saw somewhere somebody reckonned running brushless and 11.1 lipos managed 80mph#! dunno how true thatd be?

They are pretty tough standard. Mine hasn't broken anything that actually stopped it from running yet, apart from the Titan motor gave out so I lobbed a 12t double in it for a laugh. One area to keep an eye on is the rear bumper, it is very large and an awkward landing can put a big load on the tranny case using the bumper as a lever. I've broken the tranny case but it is holding at the moment. Another problem is the camber blocks. They have a habit of breaking, alloy fixes that if they do though.

Top end standard with a seven cell and 23/86 gearing (which will burn the motor if you use it off road) is about 30 mph. I found it most fun with 20/86 gearing and a 2s lipo, plenty of get up and go, decent top speed and cool running.

The slash will never reach 80mph, the bodyshell is too large, creates too much drag and at above 50mph acts as a big parachute, pulling the truck off the ground. The suspension is also not suitable for high speed, too high and soft. Lowering and stiffening it defeats the object of the slash, mine is slightly lower than usual, but just as soft so it rolls nicely through corners and ducks and dives under braking. If pure speed is what you are after, you want a Bandit or a Rustler VXL.

Back fresh from it's maiden run on slightly damp, cold tarmac. :o Those Zippys really give up the juice. Can't wait for some dry runtime. Going to pick up a hardcorr body, take the front bumper off and get some epic beadlocks with striker tires and slam the truck right down on touring car shocks. Should be a bit different.

You can touch it if you want. Hehe.  ;)

*Pokes fingers at screen to try and touch it*

Darn you 2:) Looking good though! The Zippy LiPos really are a great bang for the buck. Sounds like it's gonna be a bit like a...I dunno...a Touring Corr? Should be pretty cool, whatever way. O0

Cold Fusion Status: Not running, due to broken suspension arm.
Air Fury Status: Pretty much running. Needs new battery setup (overheating badly), and soon, motors.
Electrical Storm Status: Under construction; 25% complete. Will finish it sometime before the earth is swallowed up by the sun.
TBX (Tamiya Brushless Xtreme) Status: STILL waiting to be sold as an "almost-roller". PM me if interested!
King Bee Status: Almost flying, just needs a few bits and some repairs.
Solaris Status: It flies! Ailerons are rubbish, but it flies. Just doesn't like landing...
Project X: So secret, it doesn't even have a codename!

Yep, a Touring CORR. should look natty with the hardcorr shell and beadlocks! Still haven't had a dry day to try it yet. Today looks promising but I'm in work from 12. Poo.

Amen to that Stu.

Had a bit of a revelation today, got brave with all the dry tarmac around and went to a 25t pinion. First run there was a loud bang and the truck overturned doing around 40, when I got to it I discovered that both rear tyres had torn off the rim when i punched the throttle up to about 3/4s.

Reglued the tires and went for another run, Guesstimate from other forums and speed charts she's doing about 55 and hitting the aerodynamic wall. Front end is no longer on the floor at that speed and the slightest bump will send it over backwards. I'm hoping going to a new Hardcore shell with the front left long and the bumper removed with a lip spoiler mounted on the back will give a bit more purchase. 31/76 oughta get it moving too. Roflol.

Very nice O0

I'm waiting to see the SC10, I've got to get one or the other, thinking it may replace my Savage :o

Fairly big update coming soon, broke a few parts so decided to go ahead with my conversion to an on road truck. STRC rear hub carriers, shock caps and steering bellcranks on the way to sure up the suspension and sort the slop in the steering, epic beadlocks with STRC locking rings, striker tyres on the rear and road hawgs on the front with dual layer inserts (both taped to prevent ballooning), Hard core shell etc. I've removed the front bumper, so that I can leave the front of the body shell long as a splitter. Gonna pop rivet a deck lid spoiler to the back to see if it'll stay planted.

Suspension will be standard shocks, but with vastly limited travel and very stiff (probably cut down 1/8th) springs and maybe with TiNi shafts. Already got the suspension setup so just waiting for parts.
