Riot 17mm Hex Adapters
« on: November 24, 2008, 01:40:08 AM »
Does anyone know if these adapters will fit straight onto the Havoc as an alternative to the 23mm hexes?

They look like they will. Just after confirmation that they do.

That's a good point...I'd be interested in finding this out too for my Havoc. Agreed, it looks like they should (axles threads appear to be the same diameter and use the same fitting), but maybe someone on here can shed some light?

Cold Fusion Status: Not running, due to broken suspension arm.
Air Fury Status: Pretty much running. Needs new battery setup (overheating badly), and soon, motors.
Electrical Storm Status: Under construction; 25% complete. Will finish it sometime before the earth is swallowed up by the sun.
TBX (Tamiya Brushless Xtreme) Status: STILL waiting to be sold as an "almost-roller". PM me if interested!
King Bee Status: Almost flying, just needs a few bits and some repairs.
Solaris Status: It flies! Ailerons are rubbish, but it flies. Just doesn't like landing...
Project X: So secret, it doesn't even have a codename!

I phoned Schumacher today and was told that they wouldn't fit. I wasn't told why nor did I ask as he sounded so disinterested and almost annoyed that I had actually made him do something today. Maybe he was hung over from the weekend? Anyway I ordered a set from elsewhere to try them out. Will report back with my findings in due course O0

OK, well the adapters arrived today and, surprise surprise, a quick check suggests that they fit as I thought they would  :--

I don't have time tonight to install them on the Havoc, but I will get them on with pics by the weekend  O0

I can now confirm that the 17mm Riot Hex Adapters are a straight fit onto the Havoc. I did one side of the truck tonight (front and rear) and there are no extra parts needed other than those that come with the adapters, or those that are already on a Havoc. O0

There is one bit that takes a wee bit of thinking, but other than that it is straight forward. I will do a step by step with pics if anyone wants it when I get some free time.

OK as promised here is a step by step guide. Its pretty straight forward and I'm assuming that you know how to take the hub carriers etc off before I start.

Firstly you will need all of the items pictured below. You may also need vice grips, a vice or some other way of holding the rear drive cups so that you can take the original ones apart. Other tools will come in handy but these are the bare minimum.

A. 2.5mm hex driver
B. Complete hub carrier assemblys
C. U3216 1/8 Riot wheel conversion kit
D. Threadlock

In the pic above I have all new carriers, bearings and drives. This is not necessary and you can use your existing components

Firstly remove the Hi-Tensile axle from the rear drive cups. You will need to clamp the cup as the bolts (should!!) have been threadlocked at assembly. You will need these later.

It is easier to start with the front.

This is a pic of the components before assembly.

NB The axle bolts used are those that you have removed from the rear drives

1. Remove the standard axle bolts. These are no longer needed.
2. Insert a M4 nyloc nut into the hex shaped hole that the std axle came out of

3. Put one of the adapters onto the hub and locate in the lugs.
4. Screw the 35mm axle bolt taken from the rear in as shown below and tighten fully

That is all there is to the front. Do the same for the other side and you should have a pair like this

The rear follows a similar route but has a major difference. In the pic below the drive cup is already installed into the bearings. I had intended to use a nyloc nut too, but I found during assembly that this was hard to get threaded in using the tools at my disposal. It is probably not needed, but I thought it best to be safe rather than sorry. It was substituted with a standard nut and a drop of thread lock.

5. Use another adapter and start to attach this to the rear drive cups as shown below, using a 25mm Hi-Tensile axle bolt supplied with the set. As the drive cup is threaded you will need to apply some threadlock before it is assembled any further and fully tightened.

6. Lastly put the nut on inside the drive cup from where the dog bones would be. Again this is probably not necessary but it is added insurance.

You should end up with this

Lastly install the hub carriers onto the truck as normal and it will look something like this

This is what the finished article looks like (with my yellow show shell rather that my blue bashing shell)

I hope this helps anyone interested in getting a better range of wheels for their Havoc without having to go to the 23mm conversion.

Thanks very much. I could have gone into more detail, but it is so simple a process it would have been overkill. Feel free to move it to a more appropriate section if needs be

How do you think the 17mm hexes will stand up? Surely it should be as strong, if not stronger than the original hub configuration?

They'll do fine just look at all the brushless truggies on youtube, they have mega power on tap and stand up to it.

I'd loctite the nut to be sure, I know they nuts "grip" the wheel but a dab of loctite to make sure won't harm them O0

Sweet write up too (--) (--) (--)

Probably should have followed this up sooner.

The 25mm axle bolt that I used in the rear needs to be replaced with a 20mm version. The 25mm bolt stopped the dogbones from making their full travel in the drive cups when the rear suspension was under full loading.

Also some plumbers tape on the thread of the adapters helps stop the nuts working loose, which one did on the shakedown test. Handier to apply than loctite every time you want to change wheels or even just take a wheel off.

I took the Havoc racing today. It wasn't up to much I'm afraid, as its nearly impossible to get any traction at all. I'm sure my driving had something to do with it too. However I can report that the adapters held up to all the punishment handed out to them. Didn't break one thing on the Havoc today :)
