Manby LandRover show 90 degree challenge
« on: August 18, 2008, 09:25:49 PM »
Just thought some of you might be interested in a little 1:1 competition a friend and I entered last month.

As some of you know I've been into my offroading for a couple of yrs now and the pair of us have been looking to enter a novice winch challenge for over a yr with no luck, either I was working or he was or there was another obstacle in our way.

I came across the 90 deg' challenge advertised in a L/R mag over the xmas break so we thought we'd give it a go.
It was only after sending off our entry form and check (it cost us £200 to enter) that we started to realise just what we'd let ourselves in for.

suffice to say that it is rated as one of the most difficult challenges in the calendar, and the only one in that particular format, being designed to be extremely extreme and be a spectator friendly event too.

We had a great time tho, learned an awful lot from the world class competitiors and their vehicles and even managed to bring home some silverwear, although we only came 13th out of 20 ,  winning the spirit of the event trophy.  :)

can't wait for next yr when we're going for a top 10 place.

oops, dunno how that happened. there's more on youtube tho, with more to come soon

That is absolutely mental!!!

Takes some bottle to do that, you seem to spend an awful lot of time looking at the sky before you eventually get over the ridge!

Is the winch a 12v jobbie that attaches to the front bumper or is it something more substantial?
Hyper 8.5 , GO.21 5 port. Stock at present.

I'd say it is just the 12v bumper winch. I didn't go to this event, but I've been rescued myself a number of times by these guys and they are the biz when it comes to winching.

Absolutely right there Colin, 12v bumper mounted winch running off dual batteries. It's a 6hp motor running thru a wet gearbox to the drum, and these are pretty much the fastest winches you can get without going hydraulic (all very well but if your engine's dead then the winch won't work)

The sky does play a large pat in the drivers weekend, meaning that me being the co-driver has to be his eyes when winching, telling him exactly what to do and when, working out the best route thru the obstacle and how and where to winch from and to.

it's a totally different experience to anything we'd had before, being faced with something you'd struggle to climb knowing that you have to get a 2 ton car up it. And against the clock at that !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, it's that time of year again and our entry into this years 90 deg' challenge has just been confirmed.

After last yr's result of 13 out of 20 on our first ever challenge we're going for top ten this yr, and with the mod's we've made to the truck and a bit more experience under our belts I reckon we stand a fair chance.

Dunno if there's any other offroad/Land Rover nuts out there that live up that way, but I can recommend the Land Rover show held there as a great day or two out.
