Need help... Brushless X1CRT
« on: July 24, 2008, 10:22:27 PM »
Basically I want one but I have no idea of electrics whatsoever. ::)

I've decided to go with the Mamba Monster Max and motor combo but the rest is up in the air... so any help would be appreciated!

Stu, did you get the PM on this that I replied to you about a while ago? You never responded, so I'm not sure if it ever sent...but that had all my advice in it anyway, for what it's worth. :)

Oh, fiddle. Can't have sent then, for whatever reason. Luckily, I happened to save that one into my outbox, so here's what I said:

"Hey Stu!

So sorry for the slow reply mate, I've just been so busy lately. :-\ And that's the first time I've been called a guru! 2:)

So, a brushless CRT! That'll be a brilliant project mate...the CRT is one of the best platforms for a BL conversion with it's relatively wide chassis (good for LiPo positioning). You're bang-on with using an MMM, as that's gonna be a nuke-proof controller once the V2 is out (revised BEC, so will be totally reliable)...and personally, I'd wait for the Castle 1515 1y motor to be released. Like it's true-blue Neu cousin, it'll be a great motor on 4S LiPo with gobloads of power, and not too much of a ridiculous top speed (around 35-40mph or so, depending on how you gear). The 1512 could also be used (Castle will be doing a 1512 version), though that's more ideal for buggies. A 1515 should run cooler in a bigger truggy, like the CRT.

As for LiPos...well, it depends how much you want to spend. How much do you know about LiPos? At the moment, the NeuEnergy cells are amongst the best out there and also go for a great price. The easiest route to go would to be use one big 4S pack one one side of the chassis, with the motor on the other (or you could do a twin-pack setup...I'll explain about that if you want me to) NeuEnergy can do you a 4900mah 25/50C pack for $210, or a 5000mah 30/60C pack for $245. Both would run great in your CRT, though the 5000 30/60C would offer a bit more punch and runtime due to its higher discharge rating and slightly larger capacity. You could go down to a 4000mah pack without limiting power, but something around 5000 or even 6000 will obviously give you better runtimes and power. Up to you on that front.
You could mount the battery just fabbing up your own simple tray, with a velcro strap. RC-Monster also do pre-made delrin trays, which you just drill and screw to the chassis. :)

Then you've got the motor mount. RC-Monster do a purpose-designed mount for the CRT which fits in place of one of the centre diff mounts, so it looks very factory and is strong, too: http://www.rc-monster.com/proddetail.php?prod=RCMCRT1.

That's about it, really...you'd be able to do away with the mechanical brakes, or keep them if you want and disable braking on the ESC. I hope that helps a bit Stu (just let me know if it doesn't make any sense lol). You'll have to post a topic on this for sure! O0

Cheers,
Chris"

Hopefully that's of some help. :)

Nope, would of seen that monster of a PM!

It'll be the RCM Mount and tray, most likely a one side pack job without the brake servo.

The MMM will provide the movement for the beast, I take it I want the 2200kv motor..?

I've also named it.... FATBOY

Right a new chassis, f/r braces and stone guard (after apex's deductions it cost about 75p so why not?) is winging its way to me, and I'm just about ready to start ripping the POS apart to see whats good, bad or ugly... wish me luck. O0

Well I'm still going, just every-bloody-thing on this truggy is cack... the bearings have gone, the screws are a mixed bag of everything and anything (often rounded off for more enjoyment), the diffs have had screws run into them so they are all gouged out for good measure... I'm on the brink of giving up... and this is before I've got to work out what Kv and everything else means!

Still, gives me a reason to buy some bling 28) Currently I'm grabbing some innovative-rc diff cups... so I'm wondering if anybody has got any ideas for an oil setup? Keeping in mind this is brushless, so the middle will be something like 30,000k

Cheers, and wish me luck O0

Roll on the next lot of surprises! ::)

I'd drop the same in the front and about 5,000 in the rear. This will give you great power on steering to pull you out of the corners. Since running a heavy weight in the front I've much preferred the feel of both Truggy and Buggy. Its personal preference at the end of the day though. I prefer a tight front end, and a loose rear (hmm, please keep in an RC context ???).

Oooh, I like FATBOY...very catchy. O0

You're right on the diff oil though. You'll need some pretty thick stuff to stop the front end diffing-out uncontrollably, so 20 or 30,000 should help calm things down (hopefully without causing too many wheelies). This is gonna be one heck of a basher. O0

The diff cases didn't show up today along with a few other things so for another week it'll be it bits which is a shame... but hey ho, thats the way it goes.

Dam it man, I'm sorry things have turned out bad right now. I hope things pull round before you have to let to much go.

I found myself fiddling with this beast today, basically because I was hunting for misc stuff to sell.

Despite missing 2 spacers the RCM servo mount is in (ended up using some nuts as they were pretty much the same size).

Looks like I'm going to have to use a Hyper ST center diff as the 62t stocker doesn't leave much of a gap for the battery pack.

As you can see here (not mine):

The Hyper ST one is 52t so obviously free's up a bit of space.

Hopefully going to stick with it, just might take a bit longer then I was planning.

Right CC combo is on delay until december so that gives me time to play around with the other aspects of the car...

I'm now on the hunt for a Hyper ST diff, or the part no's to make one, I even tried ebay and there wasn't one on there (in the UK)

So the build slowly goes on... if anyone has any ideas for a motor instead of the cc one I'm all ears, build info can be found above ;)
