Tamiya TA05
« on: March 05, 2008, 10:05:02 PM »
Anyone here run the Tamiya TA05?

I am thinking of getting the "R" version to replace my now tired Schumacher Mi2. I can get it new from HK for £140 which seems pretty good to me, although I don't know many people that run them. Any pointers would be great O0

I've not run one myself Colin, but I've heard very good things about them. Whether it'd be a good successor to the Mi2, though...I don't know. It'd certainly be a very capable car (so definitely not a step backwards), but I'm no expert on tourers. There are a lot of other options to consider, but for £140...that ain't bad at all.

I'm sure someone will with more experience than me will chip in and say I'm talking rubbish lol , but the TA05-R would be a fairly decent choice IMO. The TB02, though a shafty, was an exceptional car for its price bracket, so I don't see why the TA05 wouldn't be too...

I hope its good, just brought one :D

£130 from HK to my door, not bad for the "R" version. I'd just about had enough of the Mi2 letting me down, Schumacher made that car more annoying than it needed to be. The Tamiya will be much cheaper to run and get spares for, which will make a change.

Look out for an Mi2 and loads of spares on Ebay pretty darn soon 2:)

Seriously, its not a bad car. I've had a recent run of bad luck and don't want to through any more money at it.

Well that was fun >:(

An almighty screw up by Paypal has finally been sorted after getting on for 10 days of emails etc. The money has now been transfered so hopefully my new TA05 will be with me in a week or so.

I need to get back to regular racing, this was supposed to be my return :(

I'm taking photos as I'm doing the build. As soon as I get a break I'll get them added to the site somewhere. First impressions are very good indeed :D

I've built the car at last, just in the process of transferring the motor etc from the mi2.

The car was a nice build, although the front belt feels a tad floppy to be correct. I've run through the instructions many times and can't see that I've made a mistake.

Does anyone know if the front belt is loose on the TA05 by design? The belt carries about 1.5cm of flex whilst the rear is just 5mm which seems much more like it to me :-\

I've had to order a pinion gear now to finish things off, so it will be next weekend before shes running. Can't wait to start weekly racing again :D

i came back from holiday from USA 2 weeks ago ,and i could not resist to get a TA05-R.
The 05-R was my first touring car about 4 years ago,and i did love it to bits.
then after 3 year i decided to try something different,so i sold it and got a CORALLY PHI.
What a mistake!!!!!to my opinion the car was beautifully build, but fragile as a egg  .i really did not enjoy to drive the PHI  because of the continuous breakages,so i decide to sell it and get the TA05MS that is basically a evolution of the ta05 and ta05-r.
i must say that all the TA05 range are great to drive and they are bullet proof .
so now i do have the TA05-R and the TA05MS.
PLUS i did buy the spare parts to convert it to a TA05-R IFS (lay down front shocks) so i will be able to use some nice low body shells .

Laughing Potato regarding the belt a tad floppy.. have you set correctly the belt tensioners on eah side?

Yeah sorted now mate. I managed to work that out, although the instructions could be clearer on this point. I basically had them set the wrong way round, although its a simple fix. I have to say its an interesting way to adjust belt tension, but I like it.

I'm hoping to race at Slough this Friday, can you make it Salvo?

i've only had my IFS for a few weeks, and after a few teething problems( my fault) and a few new bits, she absolutely flew last night at my club. there is nothing more frustrating than looking forward to racing all week and then getting breakage after breakage with top end cars. She took hit after hit from some beginners and never looked like getting damaged. Like they say- to finish first you must first finish..I'm sticking with her for the duration..

Hey, welcome to the site.

I had the very same thing first time out. In fact it was so poor I sulked for a month and nearly didn't bother with it again. However, last time out, after looking into the teething problems (my poor construction) she flew. In fact it handled far better than my Mi2

I'm a massive TA05 fan now, and can't see myself switching.

I've managed to break a few bits though, but when I crash I like to do it in style. Hinge pin and turnbuckle so far......................

yep - couldn't agree more. Ok, there may be faster top end cars out there, but at our level its far more important to have a car that handles well. Staying on the track, taking  good lines and the ability to survive a few bumps will always add up to better times than the few milliseconds saved by having the latest graphite differential sprocket flange.

I'm now in love with this car again. Salvo fixed up the ESC and transmitter settings and the car feels totally drivable :D I now just need a decent set of batteries, although I think I'm going to purchase a decent Lipo. hardy seems worth forking out for standard batteries these days. I think bang for buck Lipo is now worth getting over traditional cells.

I'm 100% going electric now, nitro will be just run for the Truggy nats.

I've got my 5000mha Lipo through the post today. Its a perfect fit and I can't wait to try it Friday night at Slough.

I'm going to order another one so I've got enough battery power to last the evening. certainly better than lugging 5 battery packs to the track race nights. I've got a new shell to boot, and will now being taking electric touring cars seriously :D

yep i use a lipo 5000 too with a novak brushless 8.5. Its amazing. Because we race on polished floor with v low grip , most of us turn down the power quite a bit. This means i can run about 4 heats, a final and several laps of practice/set up without even a charge. It's just ridiculous. I'm trying to sort out my steering slop though, its seems huge to me. I can't even set it up properly on my board. does anyone have any advice on where it comes from or how to get rid of it? cheers..

Do you race at Bisley?

I had huge issues with steering after I'd built up the model. I was so annoyed I gave it up for months (moody swing time 2:)). A friend of mind sorted it though, basically it wasn't built as good as it could have been ::)  Make sure all the steering links and adjustments are loose enough to work but not allow slop. Mine was just a little loose and it cause loads of hassle making it a real pig to keep in a straight line.

Once this car is dialed in, imo its as quick as anything else out there.

I've been advised it get the kimbrough servo saver as this is meant to help loads on the stock servo saver O0
