Baja copy
« on: January 04, 2008, 05:04:18 PM »
hi all
seems the chinese have started the baja copy selling

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BRAND-NEW-23-CC-1-5-SCALE-BAJA-5X-PETROL-BUGGY_W0QQitemZ220187500061QQihZ012QQcategoryZ19168QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

and at half the price of a genuine hpi one
from all the info i have read it seems that its the exact same model and if a set of hpi stickers were put on the body no-one would ever be able to tell its a copy
aparently they cant sell it as a 5b as then the copyright would set in but just a small change to 5x is enough to keep it legal

whats your views ??

Terrible news
i can't stand people ripping others off
i bet the quality is lower with the clone and it ruins the hobby because if someone buys one and it falls apart easily people will get fed up
with the hobby and give up because of the cost

According to reports the manufacture for both the hpi and copy are both made in the same factory using the same parts for both so quality wouldnt be an issue , there is speculation that a uk shop might be importing some to sell (speculation only ) , certainly a cheaper way into the hobby at over half the hpi price and the hpi parts apparently are a direct fit

Quote
ive seen one in real life and they ar exactly the same as hpi baja , the only thing s that they dont have is drive shaft boots but they do have the upgraded driveshafts which is a hop up on hpi bajas, they also have dirt buster tyres front/rear just nwithout hpi on the sidewall, they must of been under some agreement with hpi to no release them onto the open market untill now hense that is why we are only seeing them now, i have put my hpi baja and the so called clone throught the same sort of bashing test if you want to call it that and they have no flaws or anything that is weak on them, soon to be available for sale in uk contact me for more info price is going to be around £400 - £430 just tying up loose ends for a container full (250 per container)

that quote is from someone in the uk

I think its great news, and well done the guy bringing them to the UK (--)

I would suspect the radio gear to be crappy, but the plastics should be the same. This is happening loads in the Rc would now, AE and TT had a love in and brought use the mta/mgt trucks.

Lets face it, the Baja 5b is a stupid price, and i'm for anything that will drag it down to a normal level. I wonder if Nitrotek are importing them? Don't be fooled into thinking the Chinese stuff is rubbish, a lot of the new stuff is pretty decent. The VRX range would be a good example imo

Great news for HPI Baja owners too, as they now will have a cheaper parts available. HPI may have even sold the rights to the design, or only had exclusivity for a couple of years. Either way, its good news for us :D

brilliant news  O0

wonder if HPI sold them the designs as they aren't making enough off the baja range, this company sell for minimum profit and then hpi pick up the spares support = hpi more money

I already have my hpi baja that i bought about 8 or 9 months ago. These werent avaliable then but if they were i would of deffinatley gone for one of these. These would leave you £300 for hopups if you had enough money for the hpi baja. These things are causing quite a bit of a stir on loads of forums and the people who bitch about them need to pull thier heads out of thier own backsides >:(.We get ripped off for everything in this country and these clones arnt going to ruin the hobby but get more people into it who cant afford £600 odd for a 'real'baja.Istill cant work out if they are all made in the same factory but either way you are getting a bargain in my opinion O0.

It could also force NitroTek to reduce the price of their 1/5th scale models to compete. I'm sure I said 2007 was going to see a big increase in Large scale RC's. looks like I missed it by one year :-\

It's a bit annoying that they can do them fro that cheap, but hey-ho... life goes on.

More large scales the better in my eyes! Bring on the racing! >:D

this is the reply from an ebay buyer of the baja x

hi , yes it is spot on , you may have noticed , but the baja x is actually an hpi baja 5b with a different body on it . compare the pics as i did but i can assure you that is a hpi baja 5b , im very pleased with mine . the guy who is selling them works in the baja x factory , and obviously gets them at a good price , but this is also where hpi buy them from and just stick their body on it with their decals and them sell them on for at least 50% more . this baja x is a steal at that price you will not regret it . although be prepared for a wait for the baja to arrive mine took 4 weeks and alot of emails to get the proper tracking number , but he is a genuine seller just has a few delivery problems .hope this helps, and any further info required my email is woodys1@hotmail.com.

this is the reply from the ebay seller

yes this is copy of HPI, it have a good quality like oricinal, i can offer a good price to you when you really to buy 10, but it must discuss in MSN, my MSN is .................................

Blimey, I wouldn't like to be a modelshop with a stock of 3 or more Baja's sitting out back. I feel they could become a place for dust to gather 2:)

If they were sensible they would break them all for spares , coz if these new baja's prove popular they could make more by selling the parts

EDIT: You know , for when people wedge them under cars for example  :P

My Hyper 8.5 was £299 + postage . The engine was £100. I already had a starter box @ £50 plus glowstarts etc etc . All of a sudden £250 for Baja looks very viable

well it certainly looks like a steal at the prices they are offering them , even if the plastic is slightly inferior then as and when something breaks replace with hpi original parts , i for one would not pay close on 700 quid for a hpi one but at 250 you cant go wrong really

My dad was wanting to get a petrol large scale car and was gonna get a FG Marder cos its cheaper than a Baja. I was gonna get a Ansmann virus and was trying to convince my dad to get one instead of the Marder cos its half the price, but now I think wel both get one of these. Only about 50 quid more than that what I would have paid for the Virus without the hassle and running costs of Nitro.

Hopefully should order it soon if my dad wants one.

For £300 I'd get one, there's a guy on the actual HPI baja forum and he's got one and it's as tough as the rest. O0

I'd advise you get these to keep you a happy bunny

Prefilters (pullstart & Air Filter)
Wheel Extenders (either front & rear or just rear... I only have vertigo rear ones)
Failsafe

Not essential... but I'd sldo recommend spektrum and the Phatdad shock shaft kit if your jumping it... the stock rear ones aren't the most resilient ones on earth 2:)

Off the guy on ebay. He had some that were listed as just buy it now, but otheres with buy it now or best offer. Sent him an offer for 250, which he counter offered 260 to. So paid 260 plus postage. So comes to about 315 each.

Just can't wait for it to arrive.
