Another weekend, another muddy day with the Landy

My first Pay n Play, and boy was it muddy. I didn't do that badly though, I managed to get through most of the situations I encountered.

I was tagging along with the Discovery owners club and was 4th in line. The two lead cars got stuck for around 1.5 hours so I took to some routes on my own. A little risky, I've not way of getting free if I get stuck. My daughter wasn't so keen, but see trusted her dad %*% Anyway we did fine and found a good few new lanes to travel but found our path blocked by a stuck Toyota. So we brushed through some bush and found a new path. Then all of a sudden the back end broke free and we slipped down a gully missing a tree by 2 inches. Now we were really stuck and had no way of getting free. Then almost instantly the recovery tractor came by and winched us free. I was a bit concerned about bashing the tree in this process, but we managed to just clear it. I needn't have bothered, later on in a similar spot I had to get a tow from Cliff, and in the process we had no option but to rub bash a tree. So now the Landy has its first scar, a tribute to a good days  off-roading.

Just a little stuck

Not as bad as this though

Thanks for that "MATE"   :--   but as you know Colin it can't roll over while I'm holding it up.   2:) 2:) 2:) 2:)

I'm not actually in any danger there as the front o/s was down a 2 ft hole almost against a tree stump. We were just rocking the car trying to give it some purchase in the bog.

Just in case anybody is genuinely concerned though ( yeah right    ) if we were in a situation where the car was in any danger at all of rolling we'd have had at least one winch on it immediately (my car was only a few feet away behind, and carried out a mechanical recovery rather than the BFI approach. O0  (Brute Force and Ignorance    2:)  )

There are more pix of this and other outings here if anyone's interested.

finally got round to uploading this to YouTube. It was filmed by our Gizwaz and was part of the day with the Kent Discovery Owners Club.

Doing this has kept RC in the back seat for most of the winter. There is something very satisfying taking a tonne of vintage mental and chucking it around a muddy field.

My series 3 was pretty capable compared with some of the Disco's that day. It was largely down to the narrower tyre width and aggressive tread pattern (+ my driving 28))

Nice, I'm getting a Discovery TDi 300 soon. Need it to pull our caravan, but its also going to do off roading in a non damaging way. I love that bumper sticker "Your skid stops here" 2:)

Looking at your Disco up on the bank with the wheel hanging. You need some dislocating springs, it really maxs the articulation. I'm sure Cliff will so you some of his disco.

Are you doing the London to Brighton this weekend?

It has cones all round,
+2" springs and shocks,
Double Cranked rear arms,

And all tyres are on the floor not hanging mate.

No LTB other commitments

from when we did the camel cut playing cross axled on some ramps

You can see the rear cones at top of the spring!

Nice to see another fan of the "family offroader".

With a little massaging these can become a great toy, and with a bit more effort they can compete with the best of em.

I'm running a 2" lift (shox and springs) rear 2" shock droppers, X springs, extended braided brake hoses, oversize heavy duty cranked trailing arms (that fix under the axle so no poss' of binding at all) , polybushed all round, rear h/d bumper , steel 3 piece steering guard, diff guards and most recently have changed from my discoparts tubular winch bumper carrying a T Max EWI 12000 to a defender bumper with my 8274 mounted in there  O0 (which took some work to get on, believe me)

A different front view of a disco

Nice and snug

maximised approach angle

Can see it clearly in that picture, but really does look to be hanging in the one above ???

You certainly have the places to go and play around where you live. Although I have some cracking green lanes about 20 miles from home which is pretty good being so near London. I'll get loads of photos from the L2B which I'll post up Monday.

Cliff, that is looking very beefy mate. What with doing that and working at 5am how do you manage it all :o

Well, considering my distributor played up when I got near a puddle I thought it best to leave the big one. I've also got a CD multichanger under my seat which would hardly thank me for doing it  LOL

I was advised to use a couple of rubber gloves to water proof the distributor. I may also create some form of guard to slow the water ingress through the front grill.
